The Supreme Court has given a big decision in the former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi assassination case. The top court on Friday ordered the release of all the six convicts, including Nalini Srihar. The Supreme Court said that if no one else has, then the court will take this step. The court said that the order of release of convict Perarivalan would be applicable to the rest of the convicts as well.
The Supreme Court has given this decision on the demand of premature release of convicts Nalini and RP Ravichandran. In May, the apex court had ordered the release of AG Perarivalan, who was sentenced to life imprisonment in the 1991 assassination case of the former prime minister.
Justice B.R. Gavai and wife Nagarathna passed the order to release the convicts. It added that the court’s order relating to Perarivalan is applicable to all other convicts in the case and also added that Tamil Nadu had recommended the release of all the convicts in the case. Convicts S. Nalini and RP Ravichandran had moved the apex court challenging the Madras High Court order, which refused to entertain their plea seeking release from jail.
Responding to the petitions, the Tamil Nadu government said that both have served more than 30 years in prison and that it had approved the pardon of all the seven convicts four years ago. On 18 May, the Supreme Court used its extraordinary powers to do full justice under Article 142 of the Constitution, as it ordered Perarivalan’s release.
